Caribbean Breeze Volunteer Appreciation Night

Cindy Wells - a Fantastic Volunteer!

Posted: Tuesday 14th June 2011 13:48

The highly anticipated and fun-filled PEI ANC Volunteer Appreciation Night (VAN) was held on Friday, May 6, in Charlottetown! It was a huge success. Over a hundred people were in attendance, both volunteers and newcomers, and it was definitely one of PEI ANC’s feel-good events of the year.

There were rousing speeches, Certificates of Appreciation were awarded, fabulous finger food was served by ANC staff, and the complimentary music by the Count and the Cuban Cocktail got everyone up and dancing! One of the major highlights of the evening was an announcement of a donation to PEI ANC by volunteer Cindy Wells, an employee of CIBC.

As part of National Volunteer Week, CIBC runs a contest across Canada for employees. Employees write about their experience as a volunteer, and winners get $5,000 dollars to donate to the community organization of their choice. Cindy won the contest and donated the $5,000 to PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada!

Craig Mackie, Executive Director for PEI ANC said: "It's both humbling and gratifying to be recognized in such grand way by one of our volunteers. It is people like Cindy and Roland who make us so successful with newcomers to the Island."

Cindy and her family first attended a PEI ANC event called 'Coffee Connecting Cultures' last October at Timothy’s World Coffee on University Avenue. (Timothy’s World Coffee provides free coffee to volunteer-newcomer matches once a week for 6 months to support ANC programs and volunteers.) Cindy, Roland, and their son Nick, signed up at the Timothy’s event, and as part of the Community Inclusion Program were matched a month later with YouLan and Meng Liang Cai and their son Meng Liang (Clark).

Caribbean Breeze Volunteer Appreciation Night 2011 was an inspiration to everyone present.
