June 20 - World Refugee Day

What would you do?

Posted: Friday 15th June 2012 08:00

Every minute eight people leave everything behind to escape war, persecution or terror.

If conflict threatened your family, what would you do? Stay and risk your lives? Or try to flee, and risk kidnap, rape or torture?

For many refugees the choice is between the horrific or something worse.

On June 20, World Refugee Day, try to imagine having to make this choice.

"Refugees arrive in Canada with only their courage and determination to begin a new life in a new country. Their resilience, skills, unique perspectives, and drive to overcome adversity, contribute to the strength of our community, and make the Island a more diverse and vibrant place for all of us to experience," says Craig Mackie, PEI ANC Executive Director.

Prince Edward Island helps to settle approximately 70 to 90 refugees each year. In the recent years, most refugee newcomers are from Bhutan, Somalia, Iraq, Burma/Myanmar, Iran, and Afghanistan.
