DiverseCity, a multicultural street festival, will take place on Wednesday, June 27th, in Charlottetown to mark Canadian Multiculturalism Day. The event will feature live music, dance, poetry, ethnic foods, traditional clothing, and information on ethno-cultural organizations in PEI. Hosted by the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada in partnership with organizations including the International Friendship Group, Tourism Charlottetown, Downtown Charlottetown Inc., Victoria Row Merchants Association and the City of Charlottetown. • 4:30-6:00 : a documentary on South America, ‘Searching For Simplicity’ will be screened in the Keir Gallery 132 Richmond Street.
‘Local film maker Andrew MacCormack throws a pack on his back full of
clothes and camera gear for a for four-month journey to South America in
an attempt to capture the simplicity and beauty of the continent, to help
North Americans appreciate the little, more subtle aspects of life. The
documentary takes viewers through Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay
and Brazil combining interviews and breathtaking images, hoping to expose
the less televised aspects of a largely ignored part of the world.’
• 6:00-8:00pm: multicultural showcase:
o New Generation Singers—Mi’kmaq drumming and song
o Roy Johnstone—Scottish music
o Scott Parsons—blues, folk, reggae--Black Islanders Cooperative

• 8:30-10:00pm: street dance with a live band begins. Ruth Mathiang’s band, a 5-piece band that performs original songs in Swahili, Arabic, English, drawing from diverse musical and cultural roots
• 10:00-midnight: continue the street dance with a ‘world music’ DJ, “Doktorpepper”
Throughout the evening:
• participants and audience are encouraged to wear clothing that represents their own ethnic origins, to create a colourful ‘fiesta’ atmosphere
• there will be market-style stalls featuring foods and other items from various cultures
• organizations related to multiculturalism and diversity (e.g. Korean Association, the Chinese Canadian Association of PEI, International Friendship Group, Black Islanders Cooperative, Multicultural Council, Oxfam, CUSO, etc.) have been invited to have information booths or displays
• the Cooper Institute will display their ‘History Walk’ from 7-9pm, (a bilingual walk-through presentation on the history of multiculturalism on PEI, from the Mi’kmaq to current immigrants)—a part of the Cooper Institute’s 2 ½ -year project, “Community Voice in Multicultural, Diversity and Inclusion Engagement”
• restaurants along Victoria Row have been encouraged to feature a particular ethnic cuisine for that evening (this could range from having one or two items as special feature dishes to planning an entire menu with table decor to match)
