There will be a table set up with simple and immediate actions you can do to support the people of Burma through Canadian Friends of Burma and other organizations. The event will take place in the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada meeting space (3rd floor above Confederation Court Mall) from 7:00-8:30pm. Enter the mall at 25 University Ave.; there will be signs and a greeter to direct you...
Although the front pages have dropped the story of the crisis in Burma (Myanmar), the situation has been critical for many ethnic groups in Burma for over 20 years. One of these ethnic groups are the Karen people. Harmony Wagner and the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada are organizing an event to re-focus on this ongoing crisis. Harmony, who has spent time working with the Mae Tao Clinic outside of the Mae Sot refugee camp on the Thai border will present footage from her experiences.
Photos from a project with Karen youth from the same camp will be on display and for sale with proceeds going towards work in Mae Sot camp (some of these photos are on display already at Timothy's). On the lighter side, the evening will also provide a chance for the community to welcome some of the Karen families who have recently arrived in Charlottetown, and to celebrate together with some authentic Karen snacks and entertainment.
