Saturday March 1st

Posted:Thursday 24th January 2008 14:40   (Updated: Friday 22nd February 2008 09:33)

The second annual BARAKA Day celebration will be held at Le Carrefour de l’Isle St.-Jean (in École François-Buote) on Saturday, March 1st, 2008. BARAKA Day is an occasion to celebrate the long-time association between Prince Edward Island and Africa, extending from the days of slavery on the Island, two centuries ago, to the present-day influx of students and immigrants of African origin. The co-sponsoring organizations are the Black Islanders Cooperative and Farmers Helping Farmers, in association with CUSO, the PEI Newcomers’ Association, and the City of Charlottetown. Admission to the Fair portion of BARAKA Day is FREE. Tickets for the evening Concert are $20.00 and can be purchased from members of Farmers Helping Farmers (see www.farmershelpingfarmers.ca for contact information, or email info@farmershelpingfarmers.ca)...

Like last year, BARAKA 2008 will include a day-time Fair (attended by hundreds of Islanders in 2007) with displays, demonstrations, ethnic food for sale, craft sales, performances, and various other free events for the whole family. The evening will feature a special Farmers Helping Farmers fund-raising Concert, highlighting music with an African flavour. Many wonderful bands will be performing--The Baraka Band, Ruth En Frenz, The Count and the Cuban Cocktail and No Fuss Movers—as well as dancers and a slide-show.

The line-up of performers for the afternoon and evening includes: Scott Parsons, Ruth Mathiang, Lisle Clarke, Kevin Kimathi, Tony Migiro, Eduardo Mendosa, Ellen Blair, Tamara Gough, Roy Johnstone, Mark Carr-Rollitt, Nancy Clement, Shane Coady, Alex Charchuk, Brian Burke, Jeff Jenkins, Bill Lea, Catherine Murley, Doug Millington, Bryson Guptal, Fraser Cameron, Doug Bridges and Gail Mullen.

Admission to the Fair portion of BARAKA Day is FREE. Tickets for the evening Concert are $20.00 and can be purchased from members of Farmers Helping Farmers (see www.farmershelpingfarmers.ca for contact information, or email info@farmershelpingfarmers.ca).
