Employment Assistance Service (EAS)

Our Goal

The Employment Assistance Service helps newcomers to Canada overcome barriers in their search for work. The service helps newcomers learn the skills to find employment. Our Employment Counsellor works with newcomers individually to determine their employment related strengths and goals. The newcomer and counsellor decide upon an action plan for finding work.

Who Can Use the Service

Any newcomer to Canada can use this service if they are:

  • living in Prince Edward Island
  • legally entitled to work in Canada (they have a Permanent Resident status, or a Canadian working permit), and
  • unemployed and looking for full-time work

Our Services

The Employment Assistance Service helps newcomers in many ways:

  • assesses strengths and skills
  • helps identify and overcome employment barriers
  • counsels about career and educational opportunities
  • makes referrals to other programs and services
  • helps with resumes, cover letters and application forms
  • assists with job search plans
  • markets qualified individuals to employers for work or on-the-job training
  • improves interview skills
  • provides encouragement and support
  • gives on-job support

Your Commitment

Newcomers who use these services must be committed to playing an active role in reaching their employment goals. In order to benefit from the program, newcomers should treat the Employment Counsellor like an employer contact. This means:

  • showing up on-time for scheduled appointments
  • being open to feedback
  • doing follow-up work that has been mutually agreed upon with the counsellor
