Immigrant Student Liaison Program (ISL)
What is the ISL Program?
The PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada started The Immigrant Student Liaison Program in May of 2002 to provide support and assistance to immigrant students in their integration into the Canadian school system on PEI. The program is presently being offered in the following schools:
- • West Royalty Elementary
• West Kent Elementary
• Spring Park Elementary
• Saint Jeans Elementary
• Queen Charlotte Junior High
• Colonel Gray High
• Prince Street Elementary
• Glen Stewart Elementary
• Sherwood Elementary
• Parkdale Elementary
• Birchwood Junior High
• Stone Park Junior High
• Ch’town Rural High
It is our aim to keep offering our ISL services to other schools to the best of our ability, on an ad hoc basis.
Purpose
The purpose of the program is to help immigrant students become successfully integrated into the PEI school system through working together with staff, students, parents and the community.
Four Main Objectives
- To assist immigrant and refugee students in adapting to their new environment;
- To facilitate greater involvement of families who are unfamiliar with the school system and who wish to participate in their children's education;
- To assist school staff in meeting the special needs of immigrant students within the school system;
- To refer immigrant students and their families to appropriate community services.
ISL Services Provided
- Needs Assessment
The needs of immigrant students are identified and assessed in consultation with guidance counsellors, administrative staff, teachers, and parents. - On-Site Schedule
A regular on-site weekly schedule is maintained at each of the schools identified as having the most immigrant students in the Charlottetown area. - Orientation
Students are given assistance in their understanding of school expectations and their own rights and responsibilities. Parents are encouraged to become more involved in their children's education. - Advocacy
The ISL worker seeks to advocate on behalf of immigrant students, staff, and parents, in helping each to understand the others' perspective and needs. - Cross-Cultural Interpreting
Support and referral is given to students having difficulties adjusting to school due to cultural issues; also assistance to staff in sensitization to cultural differences. - Extra Help
For students experiencing difficulties in keeping up with school work, extra help is provided through volunteer tutors; also ongoing monitoring of the 60 hours of ESL training delivered to students.
Tutoring Opportunities
We provide opportunities for anyone wishing to volunteer a few hours of their time every week to help a student with their English and/or other homework challenges.
A desire to work with youth from a variety of countries and cultures is all that is required. The PEIANC provides the necessary resources and support, including space for conducting tutoring lessons.
Being a volunteer tutor can create a new appreciation and awareness of:
- the challenges associated with learning a new language;
- the loneliness and barriers immigrant students face;
- the resourcefulness and strength of the human spirit in the midst of great hardships;
- the rich experience in knowing people from diverse cultures.
